Hearts & Minds Story
Hearts & Minds was co-founded in 1997 by Morven McLean and Magdalena Schamberger, our Artistic Director/CEO. They wanted to use their skills as professional performers to develop a programme to help children in hospital through developing skills in clowning.
We launched our Clowndoctors Programme in 1999 in 5 children’s hospitals, wards and hospices and we continue to visit 4 of these original health care locations, on a regular basis. We now visit 19 units, which include our work in special schools, Maggie’s Centres, and residential homes.
In 2001 we launched the Elderflowers Programme in 3 assessment wards, residential homes and day care centres. We still deliver our programme to 2 of those centres and now visit a total of 11 units throughout Scotland.
Hearts & Minds continues to be the leading organization in the UK delivering this kind of work and our Elderflowers Programme is unique to the UK.
Magdalena Schamberger has over 25 years experience of performing, directing and teaching physical theatre and theatre clowning in the UK and internationally. She is Co-Founder, Artistic Director and CEO of Hearts & Minds.
She is an Honorary Professor with the Division of Nursing at Queen Margaret University and is Vice Chair of the European Federation of Hospital Clowning Organisations (EFHCO). In 2014 Magdalena was awarded funding through Paul Hamlyn Breakthrough Fund to develop Artful Minds a dementia training programme for artists who want to create work for people with dementia.
