Hearts & Minds Story

Hearts & Minds was co-founded in 1997 by Morven McLean and Magdalena Schamberger. They wanted to use their skills as professional performers to develop a programme to help children in hospital through developing skills in clowning. Schamberger led the organisation for twenty years as Artistic Director & CEO. In December 2017, Suzie Ferguson was appointed as the new Artistic Director.

We launched our Clowndoctors Programme in 1999 in 5 children’s hospitals, wards and hospices and we continue to visit 4 of these original health care locations, on a regular basis. We now visit 17 units, which include our work in special schools, Maggie’s Centres, and residential homes.

In 2001 we launched the Elderflowers Programme in 3 assessment wards, residential homes and day care centres. We still deliver our programme to 2 of those centres and now visit a total of 6 units throughout Scotland.

Hearts & Minds continues to be the leading organization in the UK delivering this kind of work and our Elderflowers Programme is unique to the UK.
