Creative Scotland publish report on arts in health provision in Scotland
Creative Scotland recently published a report mapping responses from organisations and artists that are working within the arts in healthcare sector in Scotland.
It is encouraging to read there is a growing interest in the connection between the arts and health/wellbeing and the benefits and impact in this area.
In the summary the main points to note are:
Challenges faced by organisations and artists
• Funding is a major issue • The need for increased understanding of the value and roles arts can play • Integration of arts into healthcare and not to be seen as an ‘extra’
Ambitions shared are:
• The continued delivery of the current provision • Expanding models to reach more diverse groups and more cities/areas • Further integration of arts into healthcare • Fostering a better understanding of the value of work in arts and health
There is a call from organisations for Creative Scotland to provide long term flexible funding focussing on ‘tried and tested’ work as well as new initiatives.
They would also like to see:
• Support of the creation of a strategy for arts and health/wellbeing across Scotland • Championing social prescribing around arts-based activity • Support the sector with evaluation and impact measurement
Please take some time to read this insightful report which raises many key messages including how the arts can aid recovery, can tackle major problems in health and social care with children and young people, the elderly and people with complex additional support needs and can save money in healthcare.
